The results of a study of a geomagnetic storm Pc 5 pulsation using GEOS 2 particle detectors and magnetometers from GEO and STARE auroral radar scanning the ionosphere are presented. The STARE radar detected the disturbances because of the presence of an electrojet driven by a steady electric field of 15 mV/m. Details of the drift mirror instability theory are reviewed, and it is assumed that the guiding center drift was the dominant component. The measurements allowed comparison of phase relationships between the magnetic field components, the energetic particle flux, and the electric field in the ionosphere over a substantial region. A theoretical coupling between a drift mirror wave and a standing Alfven wave is produced, along with supportive evidence. The disturbance is found to be wavelike, and to propagate westward in the equatorial plane at 6.6 earth radii.
