The Evershed effect is the wavelength displacement of lines in the spectra of sunspot penumbras. In the solar atmosphere this effect is characterized by an inflow of material from the chromosphere into the sunspot. High resolution filtergrams at seven wavelengths in H alpha have been used to study the three dimensional structure of the Evershed flow. The time variation of the flow is investigated on the basis of velocity maps obtained by the photographic subtraction method.-
