The physical and chemical evidence supporting various theories of lunar evolution is discussed. Attention is given to similarities in the chemical composition of lunar rock samples and rock found on the earth, which suggest that the moon is the product of either gravitational capture, binary accretion, or fission from the earth. The main features of each of these theories are described in detail. The role of the Apollo missions in providing data in support of the three theories is also discussed. A series of black and white photographs of the lunar surface taken during the Apollo program is provided.
