Electric fields and currents on the night side of the auroral oval are studied. The electric field distribution between the field-aligned current sheets is determined, based on the Pederson conductivity of the ionosphere. It is assumed that the site of electric field generation is the current sheet of the magnetospheric tail and that the plasma in the tail is polarized under the influence of a Lorentz force. It is found that the polarization field is projected along geomagnetic field lines to the auroral zone and causes the Hall current that constitutes a westward electrojet.
