A broad numerical data base for the heat transport properties of convection in the earth's mantle when the viscosity depends on temperature according to a simple exponential law is presented. Other quantities relevant to mantle convection, like internal and surface velocities or the average internal temperature, are also considered. A brief desciption of the constitutive equations and the numerical method is given, and numerical results are compared with those of laboratory experiments with rigid boundaries. The wavelength dependence of the Nusselt number is considered for convection with free boundaries. A maximum at long aspect ratio is determined for low Rayleigh numbers and moderate viscosity contrasts. The properties of variable viscosity convection are determined over a broad parameter range. These data are then presented in the form of different parametrizations, and the geophysical implications are briefly explored in an end-member model of parametrized whole mantle convection with beta equal to zero.
