The papers deal with such topics as radiative and mechanical sources of energy for the stratosphere, the neutral composition of the stratosphere and mesosphere, the ionization-recombination cycle of the D-region, the chemistry of the D-region during disturbed events (solar flares, PCAs, and eclipses), models and experimental calculations of the dynamics and structure of the quiet thermosphere, optical observations of the thermosphere, energy deposition in the thermosphere by charged particles and electric fields, auroral zone electrodynamics, auroral generation of infrasonic waves, incoherent-scatter observations of magnetic substorms, the global propagation of atmospheric gravitational waves, and the effects of magnetic storms on the ionospheric F-layer. Evidence is presented which relates midlatitude medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances with auroral sources and which supports the present understanding of the role of hydrodynamic waves in the general stratospheric circulation. Individual items are announced in this issue.
