WE have recently discovered small quantities of cinnabar (HgS) in the galena-calcite-fluorite ore-bodies of Rutland Cavern, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. The mineral occurs in cavities, most often in fluorite, as a brick-red deposit associated with smithsonite (ZnCO3) and iron-staining, and under the microscope appears as minute red specks dusting the surface of smithsonite and fluorite. This is the first recorded occurrence of a mercury mineral from the British Isles. Since our discovery cinnabar has also been identified on a specimen from Peat Pasture, Greenhow Hill, Patoley Bridge, Yorkshire, in the collection of Sir Arthur Russell, Bart.
