Periodic light and color variations of the now quiescent flare star BY Dra are presented and shown to be inconsistent with a thermal dark spot model at the present time. The present observations are explained in terms of persistent Ca II emission regions of plages. From a discussion of past photometric data for BY Dra it is concluded that: (1) the spot of 1965 was dark, covering at least 12 percent of the stellar surface at an effective temperature of at least 300 K cooler than the surrounding photosphere, and lasted for at least two years; (2) period changes in the BY Dra light curves indicate the presence of differential stellar rotation; (3) there is no observational evidence for the existence of a starspot cycle on this system; and (4) spotted regions are elongated in the longitude direction, and are most likely composed of an assemblage of small spots, rather than of a single spot or several large spots.
