The effect of interstellar grain growth through simple accretion on the shape of the normalized linear polarization curve is calculated in the birefringent sphere approximation. Comparison is made to observed deviations from Serkowski's empirical curve. It is found that the observed narrowing of the polarization curve with increasing wavelength of maximum polarization can be explained by the shifting and steepening of the grain size distribution as caused by size-independent accretion. Nonspherical particles are expected to show the same 'hyperbolic' relationship between width and maximum wavelength when subject to size-independent growth.
