A 'pulse-spreading' (PS) method is proposed for obtaining the initial approximation for optimal jet-powered acceleration in calculations of the low-thrust transfer trajectories of spacecraft in a central gravitational field. The PS method is shown to be superior to existing methods (particularly the 'transporting-trajectory' method) for angular transfer distances of the order of 360 deg and large eccentricities of the initial and/or final orbits.
