Some results of recent N-body simulations of isolated systems are summarized. The main emphasis here is on the long-term behaviour of the central core. In particular, the author discusses how the process of core collapse is halted by the formation of energetic binaries. The post-collapse phase is characterized by further binary activity which gives rise to significant core expansion as well as escaping particles of very high velocity. An interesting feature of all models is the tendency for the most energetic binary to escape by recoil from temporarily bound triple configurations.
