The total carbon contents of sixty-one chondrites have been determined in the same specimens in which rare gas analyses have been made. The carbon contents and the heavy primordial rare gas contents decrease from carbonaceous to enstatite to ordinary chondrites. A good correlation between carbon and rare gas content within the enstatite and the ordinary chondrites does, however, not exist. It could also be shown by stepwise oxidation that the primordial rare gases are not retained in carbon-containing phases. Most of the meteorites with high carbon contents are unequilibrated ones. The rare gases correlate better than carbon with the classification numbers of the subgroups.
