Horizontal macroscopic velocities in the photosphere are studied by analyzing the Doppler shifts of one spectral line in high-resolution spectrograms reaching the limb. Corrections were made for geometric foreshortening, and using calculated line formation rates and known height variation of vertical velocities, the height variation of the horizontal velocity field is obtained. Small-scale horizontal velocity field is then studied by following the proper motions of subarcsecond-size structures as seen on filtergrams obtained during very good seeing conditions. These filigree proper motions were found to imply an average velocity of about 1 km per sec.
