The physical essentials of microwave sensing of the earth and its atmosphere are presented. Characteristics of the formation of microwave radiation in the earth's atmosphere-surface are examined. Principal emphasis is given to problems yielding a practical outcome, such as determining humidity, moisture content of clouds, continuity of ice cover, moisture content, and temperature of land cover. Experience in satellite measurements in the microwave range is summarized. These measurements were made for the first time on the Cosmos 243 and Cosmos 384 satellites in 1968 and 1970.
