The inference of etal . (1969) that andesite cannot have formed by fractional crystallization of high Al-basalt is based on a method of calculation which is questioned. When the calculation relative to vanadium content is made assuming a reasonable fraction of residual andesite liquid, it seems feasible to derive andesite from high Al-basalt.
