Atmospheric sodium distributions derived according to the Liu and Reid (1979) model for sodium photochemistry, including reactions for the formation of NaOH, are compared with lidar measurements. Reproduction of the vertical distribution of atmospheric sodium by photochemical models is hampered by a lack of knowledge of reaction rates, and it is shown on the basis of Chapman (1939) photochemistry that only unreasonable choices of rate coefficients lead to the observed vertical distribution. Such models are found to contain the assumption of an unexplained sink, have unreasonable distributions of the reacting species, or have not been in equilibrium. A number of these models are also found to lead to values of the sodium airglow emission much smaller than that observed. Because of good agreement between lidar measurements and those derived by the Liu and Reid model, it is concluded that this model is capable of explaining observed vertical distribution of sodium, and the intensity of sodium nightglow.
