Observations of the ionization chemistry of the middle atmosphere, defined as the region between 100 km and the tropopause and therefore comprising the stratosphere and D-region (50-100 km), are described. It is reported that: (1) new measurements of intermediate ion species in the D-region with rocket-borne mass spectrometers have allowed identification of dominant clustering paths; (2) the relative roles played by nitric oxide, atomic oxygen, and the neutral and electron temperatures have been identified for the D-region; and (3) ionic schemes, either specifically for the stratosphere or in the form of extensions of D-region schemes to stratospheric heights through the addition of extra reactions (including those involving aerosols), have been introduced.
