Alternatives to the classical neutrino theory of Brill and Wheeler (1957) are briefly summarized. It is noted that the solution to the Dirac equation for massless neutrinos in the framework of this theory yields zero momentum and energy, while consideration of spherically symmetric space-times (such as used in describing neutrino emission from a star) results in a vanishing wave function. Alternatives discussed include discarding static or 'ghost' solutions, averaging the energy-momentum tensor over the unit sphere (allowing neutrino emission from an exactly spherically symmetric star), assuming a nonzero rest mass for neutrinos, devising a different classical theory, and considering 'ghost neutrino' solutions as some kind of relic from quantum gravitational theory.
