The magnetic field level of the quiet-time ring current is determined based on simultaneous measurements of the geomagnetic field current on the earth's surface, particles in the current region and interplanetary medium parameters and Dst indexes for the very quiet period of January 23-24, 1974. Proton fluxes in the ring current region were measured for particles of energies 31-377 keV by a three-channel differential spectrometer carried on board the Molniya-1 satellite to obtain a value for the total ring current energy of 3.6 + or - 0.8 x 10 to the 21st erg, corresponding to a magnetic effect at the earth of -9 + or - 2 nT. An expression relating the value of the Dst index to the solar wind velocity and density is also obtained which implies a magnetic effect of the quiet-time ring current of -8.1 + or - 2.2 nT, in substantial agreement with the satellite-derived value.
