Space Missions: Comets
Scientific paper
The Contour mission is dedicated to the study of cometary nuclei. The spacecraft, to be launched in June 2002, is planned to have close encounters with comet Encke in November 2003, with comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 in June 2006, and with comet d'Arrest in August 2008. The payload includes a high resolution imager/spectral mapper, a wide-angle camera, a dust analyzer, and a mass spectrometer. A spatial resolution of 4 m per pixel is intended for each comet nucleus. The mission design is highly flexible and could easily be redirected in case a spectacular "new" comet arrives in the inner solar system during the mission lifetime.
