A historical review is given of the growing understanding of Knudsen flow, from Martin Knudsen's papers. Knudsen introduced the important criterion for molecular flow in terms of mean free path in relation to tube dimensions and discussed the transition to Poiseuille flow (expressed in terms of the ratio of mean free path to critical apparatus dimension - now referred to as the Knudsen number Kn). The topics covered include: molecular flow, gas scattering from surfaces, molecular flow in tubes, molecular beaming effects of tubes, and transition flow at lower Knudsen numbers.
