Diamond machining of aspheric lenses can introduce manufacturing errors which are not found in conventionally finished optics. They have therefore not been addressed by conventional tolerancing and raytracing methods. This paper shows how some of these errors arise, and their appearance when examined interferometrically. Raytracing and experimental analysis of the effect of these errors on system performance is described, and diagnosis, with or without null test optics, is discussed.
