A critical analysis of existing methods and results of the determination of the optical properties of the Mars atmosphere during periods of its high transparency is performed. Estimates obtained with direct measurements, i.e., Viking measurements from the surface of the planet, and remote measurements did not agree. An analysis of estimates of the optical thicknesses at the spacecraft landing sites was carried out, and the results suggest that the optical properties of the Mars atmosphere varied greatly during the photometric experiments. These variations may have been due to haze dissipation during morning measurements and haze condensation during evening experiments.
