The peculiar behavior and likely spatial character of Mercury's sodium atmosphere are examined. The sources of the atmospheric sodium, the sodium lifetime in the atmosphere, and the loss rate of the sodium are discussed. Because of the large and extremely variable solar radiation pressure experienced by sodium atoms and the possible presence of a nonthermal surface source, the size and shape of the sodium atmosphere can vary tremendously with Mercury's orbital location about the sun, thus providing valuable signatures for remote study.
