The effect of various field-aligned current distributions - that can represent those of transpolar arcs or theta auroras - on the global potential distribution is examined numerically. The distributions are calculated based on the current distributions for the region 1/2 system of the auroral oval and the transpolar arc, including the corresponding ionospheric conductivity distribution. Several downward return-current distributions are used to classify the field-aligned current distributions of the transpolar arc. The potential pattern is simulated numerically for a single upward current sheet and for two equal but oppositely directed current sheets. The model results are compared to Viking electric field data for polar arc crossings, and possible electrodynamical signatures for the auroral phenomena are given.
