Gravity waves that serve as conformally invariant bavkgrounds for the string sigma model can create space-time singularities when they collide. We describe some of the properties and pathologies of these waves, and compute the O(α') perturbation to the metric for the space-time with two colliding plane waves. The perturbative correction to the dilaton field indicates that the α' expansion becomes strongly coupled when the space-time curvature is large. The null convergence condition required for proving the singularity theorem for these space-times can be violated for certain choices of amplitude and polarization of the colliding waves.
