High resolution electron density measurements by EISCAT during the preonset phase and onset of an auroral absorption substorm are used to investigate the characteristics of electron precipitation during these substorm phases. The development of the preonset phase is the result of a uniform increase of electron fluxes with energies of a few tens of keV, with no particularly hard component. The absorption spike observed at substorm onset contains a fine structure when investigated at 10-s resolution, indicating a rapid hardening of the precipitating spectrum at the onset.
