The daily variation of the ionospheric electron density is plotted against the height to produce cyclic diagrams for typical conditions at Slough and Watheroo, UK. A version of the Mass Spectrometer/Incoherent Scatter (MSIS) model (Hedin, 1987) is used to relate the heights to values of atmospheric pressure. It is found that the F2 peak is at nearly the same pressure level at any given local time, over a wide range of geophysical conditions. The results show consistency between ionospheric theory, the MSIS model, and observational data.
