The stability of interstellar carbon in the preplanetary cloud is analyzed from the thermodynamic and kinetic standpoints. It is shown that the reaction with water vapor is the principal contributor to the gasification of elementary carbon in the preplanetary cloud and that this process could take place in regions of the nebula with temperatures above 1000-1200 K. Some cosmochemical implications are examined.
