The equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics are written in a special Lagrangian system of coordinates in which the basic element is the magnetic flux tube. It is shown that a plasma in a magnetic field can be viewed as a gas of interacting nonlinear strings (or flux tubes). The representation of a magnetic flux tube as a nonlinear string is particularly useful in problems with boundary layers (regions with extended magnetic field or current sheets). The proposed method can take magnetic reconnection into account and can be used to solve a large number of problems in magnetospheric and solar physics.
