A numerical calculation is made of self-consistent electric fields and field-aligned currents arising during the evolution of a one-dimensional plasma inhomogeneity in the F-region with a small transverse dimension. Particular attention is given to the effect of the magnetosphere on the high-conductivity zone in the ionosphere. It is shown that both the magnitude and the location of the field-aligned currents are chiefly determined by gradients of the self-consistent electric field. In turn, these gradients depend on the external current on the plasma, diffusion, photochemical processes in the ionosphere, and the intensity of the initial perturbation.
