Results are presented on the observational properties of the small-scale magnetic-field structures on the sun. The indirect diagnostic methods employed to observe these structures (in which polarized line profiles or multiline information were used to overcome the resolution limits) are discussed. The observational properties of the small-scale magnetic structures are correlated to the theoretical concepts of formation, the equilibrium structure, and the origin of the surface magnetic flux.
