Diagenetic remobilization of Eu is possible under conditions of reduction to Eu2+ at low oxidation potential and near neutral solution, producing pore waters relatively enriched in Eu2+, as distinct from its trivalent REE neighbours. Eu is reprecipitated in the 3+ state in environments of high oxidation potential. These processes have produced positive Eu anomalies in highly oxidized Pleistocene muds of the Amazon deep-sea fan. Similar occurrences should be rare, but where found they do provide valuable information on local diagenetic processes and conditions.
