Geomagnetic disturbances have been identified with reference to their sources for the period 1977-1983, and the different disturbance levels were found using the daily planetary index Ap. Disturbances of high amplitude (about 50) are found to be caused by solar flares of importance one or greater, mean-amplitude ones (about 24) by coronal holes, and low-amplitude ones (about 12) by filaments. The ranges of the probable amplitudes of the different disturbances and their relative number are determined from Poisson random distributions of amplitudes.
