Magnetohydrodynamics: Magnetic Flux Tubes

The equations of a thin magnetic force tube are presented in Lagrangian form to describe the distribution of MHD parameters along the tube and its motion as a whole in a medium with a given pressure. It is noted that a thin force tube behaves like a nonlinear string. It is shown that only Alfven discontinuities are possible in a thin tube, at which tube breakdown, slow shock waves, and contact discontinuities occur.
