The observations of the Martian surface made during the Viking mission are an important factor in the study of the question whether running water ever existed on the surface of the planet. These observations indicate clearly that a fluid was the agent that cut many of the channels, and the only conceivable fluid is water. It was found that the polar cap during the summer consists of water ice. Attention is also given to data concerning the amount of argon and the significance of these data for studies regarding the development of the Martian atmosphere.
