A procedure is outlined for determining the time of ejection of a nova's main shell by analyzing the nova's light curve. The procedure is based on the observed fading of the continuum relative to emission lines in novae spectra. Application of the procedure to the light curves of Nova Cygni 1975, Nova Serpentis 1970, CP Lac, and DI Lac demonstrates the reality of the theory and justifies empirically the assumption that an expanding nova shell has invariant thickness.
