Two major modes of pulsations of solar matter are pointed out along with their significance for solar physics. Short-period pulsations of period roughly 5 min and longer-period pulsations (15 sec to 1 hr) are being studied and analyzed into groups. The longer-period pulsations may provide a tool for reconstructing the interior layers of the sun. Basic assumptions long held on the sun's structure are reviewed. Discrepancies between some visual observations and spectral observations are noted, in addition to instability and unpredictability of the oscillatory motion. Up-down convective flow (hot material upward, cooler material downward) does not fit the data. Computer analysis of tens of millions of measurements of short-period oscillations by the author and other workers show some promising results.
