Many aspects of magnetospheric dynamics are sensitive to the cold plasma density, even though the cold plasma carries almost no energy. This is because instabilities driven by energetic particles are often sensitive to the cold plasma density. A brief review of density-sensitive instabilities is given, and attention is focused on the role of the ion electromagnetic cyclotron (EMC) instability in causing SAR arcs and proton ring-current losses near the plasmapause.
