A continuous, deep (~6250 m) trough has been traced in the western Central Atlantic Ocean for approximately 900 km from the longitude 52°W to 62°W near latitude 25°N. This trough is continuous with that of the Kane fracture zone and has a left-lateral offset of 160 km, identical to that of the active portion of the Kane fracture zone. Major changes in the trend of the fracture zone are inferred near longitude 52.5'W (~53-63 m.y. B.P.) and 55.5'W (~72 m.y. B.P.). One possible explanation for this is changes in the direction of relative plate motion at those times.
