A global network of ground magnetometers, along with observations from the Polar and GOES satellites, are used to investigate global magnetospheric and ionospheric response to a sudden enhancement of solar wind dynamic pressure. The Polar satellite located at an altitude of 8 Re in the high latitude afternoon sector observed a reduction in total magnetic field strength, whereas GOES 10 near dusk recorded an increase in magnetic field strength in the equatorial magnetosphere. In the low-altitude ionosphere, auroral zone magnetometer stations experienced negative-to-positive magnetic perturbations in the north-south component on the duskside, but positive-to-negative perturbations on the dawnside. Global convection patterns based on magnetometer observations show the formation and subsequent disappearance of convection cells in the dayside polar region, but not in the classical form of traveling convection vortex. We examine the propagation of magnetic perturbations at both high and low altitudes, with a particular emphasis on the possible connection between the two remote regions.
