The geomagnetic storm on September 24-25, 1998 was initiated by a sudden compression of the magnetosphere in response to a dynamic pressure pulse in the solar wind. Simultaneous with the pressure increase, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) became strongly northward. The magnetospheric response to these simultaneous sudden changes is very different from the expected behavior in two important ways. First, following the sudden impulse, the entire auroral oval becomes very thick and active while the polar cap area decreases to less than half of its original area. Second, the magnetic perturbations measured at low latitude observatories in response to the compression of the magnetosphere shows the strongest field enhancement on the night side with little or negative response measured by stations near local noon. Both of these responses are opposite to that expected for a sudden compression of the magnetosphere. In a previous theoretical analysis, we proposed a 'transition' current system in response to the northward turning of the IMF to explain the unusual low latitude magnetic response observed during the September 24, 1998 SSC. Here we present additional analysis of the event and the results of an idealized MHD simulation to understand the SSC response to a pressure increase and sudden strong northward turning of the IMF.
