One of the long standing mysteries associated with substorms is how the information of field variation started in the mid-tail propagates into the inner magnetosphere. Furthermore, it is striking that the energetic particles injected earthward at a speed of 24 km/s (inside geostationary orbit) can still remain dispersionless (the fluxes of particles of different energies are enhanced at the same time). Presently available measurements show only local changes to the magnetic and sometimes electric fields, however, changes in particle fluxes depend on the magnetic and electric fields over a large region of space. Thus by studying the effects of various magnetic and electric fields on the observed particles we can learn about large scale changes to magnetic and electric fields during substorms. In this presentation, we will demonstrate test-particle simulations of dispersionless injections of energetic particles measured by multiple satellites and discuss the implication of the field model and initial particle distribution. In particular, we will discuss an event on Aug. 27, 2001, for which Cluster, Polar, and LANL sensors at geostationary orbit made good measurements of the field variations and particle injections.
