The purpose of this work is to investigate the origin of bipolar pulses, the relationship to ion and electron heating and to low frequency Alfvén waves. We will focus on bipolar pulse onset events using a full set of plasma wave, plasma and magnetic field diagnostics. We use Polar satellite high time resolution data for the study. It is observed that there are many (presumed) interrelated related phenomena present. As noted in previous studies, ion conics and electron (isotropic) heating are present at the same time. New and surprising events are the presence of large amplitude magnetic perturbations. Our interpretation is that these are kinetic Alfvén waves (KAW). The oblique propagation, linear polarization, and compressive characteristics are consistent with this idea. The waves are detected just adjacent (but well inside) the magnetopause. Thus one interpretation is that they are magnetosheath waves that have propagated into the magnetosphere and are being locally damped.
