Energetic (>30 keV) ion beams have been observed by the Polar spacecraft. During at least two conjunctions between the Polar and FAST spacecraft energetic field aligned ion beams were observed on high latitude field lines. During these intervals the magnetosphere was evidently in a disturbed state. These energetic ion beams may reflect the existence of large field aligned potentials and strong field aligned currents on high latitude field lines. We will use global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to determine if such strong currents and potentials occur in MHD models of a disturbed magnetosphere, and if so, why they occur. Next, we will study ion trajectories in the MHD model to see if ions are accelerated in a manner that reproduces the observations. The consequences of these beams at auroral altitudes will also be discussed.
