The characteristic electric and magnetic field signature of lobe cells as observed by the low-altitude FAST satellite are compared with Polar ultraviolet images of polar cap auroral activity. Initial results suggest that there is an intimate coupling between the sunward flow of the lobe cell and transpolar auroral arcs or diffuse polar cap precipitation. However, in some cases where the fields signature is suggestive of lobe cell convection, there is no detectable particle precipitation in the sunward flowing part of the lobe cell. Moreover, the presence of eveningside lobe cells occasionally coincide with UV data intensifications in the pre-midnight 2100 MLT quadrant and/or the post-noon 1500 MLT quadrant. The magnetic local time dependence of the lobe cells and polar cap precipitation on the interplanetary magnetic field are examined using the upstream ACE and Wind monitors. The relative importance of the By and Bz components are investigated and compared with the predictions of the antiparallel merging model.
