A selection of 86 planetary nebulae with good quality spectra from the spectrophotometric survey are analyzed for their chemical compositions. This is done by plasma diagnostic methods, which were tested with theoretical spectra from photoionization models. The derived mean abundances and distributions are in excellent agreement with the results of Aller & Keyes. This proves the feasibility of automatically determining abundances from survey quality spectra. Strong correlations between 0, 5, and Ar are found, as well as between N and N/O. N/O is fairly well correlated with He, S, Ar, and the Zanstra temperature of the central star. The abundances and the N/O ratio are found to increase with increasing nebular excitation, i.e. stellar temperature. Abundance gradients from type II nebulae are clearly found for He, S, Ar, and 5/0. The abundances at the solar galactocentric distance are found to be solar, implying that the average mass of the progenitor stars is close to 1 Msun.
