As a CME-driven shock approaches and passes earth, neutron monitors and muon detectors observe enhancements of the cosmic ray anisotropy. Precursor anisotropies are caused by the interaction of the cosmic rays with the shock and provide useful information for space weather forecasting with a lead time of several hours. We numerically simulate the distribution of particles in position and pitch angle, and predict how the cosmic ray pitch angle distribution near the shock depends on particle energy and shock geometry.
