This talk focuses on the signatures of magnetic activity as seen in perturbations of neutral winds, composition, minor species chemistry, and temperature observed by the GUVI, TIDI and SABER instruments on the TIMED spacecraft during its first months of operations. In particular, several moderate magnetic storms occurred during February 2-9, 2002 and a number of small solar proton events occurred in January and February. Auroral energy inputs measured at high resolution by the GUVI instrument are placed into the global context through comparison with IMAGE FUV and POLAR UVI lower-resolution images of the full auroral oval. Magnetic storm evolution is tracked using ENA observations from IMAGE which detail the build-up and asymmetries in the ring current source of high-energy ions for the MLTI. FAST, SAMPEX, NOAA POES and DMSP provide in-situ information on particles and fields to confirm and enhance the remote view provided by the TIMED/GUVI instrument and, in addition, supply information on the highest energy particles that penetrate deep into the lower thermosphere/mesosphere, perturbing the basic state observed by TIMED. The combination of these data sets provides a view of the sun-Earth chain down to one of its last links.
