The energy distributions of energetic oxygen atoms in the lower thermosphere and mesosphere are calculated. The main sources of nascent energetic oxygen atoms in different electronic states, O(3P) and O(1D), are taken into account. The steady state energy distributions of O(3P) and O(1D) atoms are determined by solving the Boltzmann equation. The energy relaxation rates in collisions of energetic O atoms with the atmospheric N2, O2, and O gas are calculated with known theoretical and experimental cross sections. Non-Maxwellian energy distributions of energetic O(1D) atoms at different altitudes are used to calculate the Doppler profiles of emission spectra of atmospheric O(1D) atoms. Results are compared with observational data on O(1D) emission in the thermosphere and in laboratory experiments.
